Abstract:
The study aimed to highlight the design requirements for public buildings according to the specific needs of people with disabilities and to influence public policies in favor of people with disabilities.
The importance of the study lies in highlighting the special needs of people with disabilities in the design of public buildings and providing information that helps decision-makers in formulating policies for people with disabilities.
This study researched the requirements for public buildings and the needs for adapting external pathways and levels for people with disabilities.
The study concluded that buildings should be designed according to the specific needs of people with disabilities, taking into account the dimensions of the human body in terms of movement, function, and the space they will use, as well as the type of disability, age, gender, and size of the individual with the disability. The researchers recommend the strict implementation of the Disabled Persons Law No. 4 of 1999 regarding environmental adaptation for the use of people with disabilities, with the Ministry of Local Government taking responsibility for applying this law and the need to develop a plan for adapting existing buildings and public facilities.
