Mission
Empowering youth with disabilities and improving their reality in the field of their issues and rights.

Message
Behametkum is an independent Palestinian organization of youth with disabilities working to enhance the role of youth with disabilities, both male and female, in advocating for their rights and participating effectively in public life, influencing decision-makers and policies. This is achieved by empowering them, building their individual and collective capacities, raising community awareness about their issues, and lobbying at local and national levels. To achieve this, it aims to establish an interactive platform for youth with disabilities to express themselves and harness their energy to meet their aspirations and hopes.

Objectives

  1. Contribute to raising community awareness regarding the issues and rights of youth with disabilities.
  2. Increase community participation of youth with disabilities and activate their role in decision-making.
  3. Promote the concept of freedom of expression, tolerance, peace, social responsibility, and the cohesion of the social fabric.
  4. Contribute to developing the capabilities of people with disabilities, enabling them to contribute to building a democratic society that respects diversity and human rights.
  5. Empower youth with disabilities and gather their energies to achieve the goals and priorities of the disability movement.
  6. Advocate for the rights of youth with disabilities.

Problems Faced by the Association | Solutions Adopted

  1. Lack of projects within the organization, leading to financial and funding shortages | The organization employed only one staff member.
  2. Lack of administrative expenses funding | The association relies heavily on the Palestinian Vision Foundation for many of its administrative expenses due to the partnership between them.
  3. Lack of financial capacity to provide a headquarters for the association | Behametkum Association has continuous partnership and cooperation with the Palestinian Vision Foundation, with the association being hosted at the foundation’s headquarters in Ramallah.

Activities Conducted by the Organization in the Previous Year

  1. Project: Towards Active Youth with Disabilities in Creating Positive Change
This project aims to engage the local community and various institutions in addressing the issues of persons with disabilities and promoting their inclusion. It helps educate the public about the rights of persons with disabilities as outlined in the law and international agreements. The project contributes to raising awareness of the disability sector and its rights through social media. It also focuses on the roles of decision-makers and institutions concerned with disability issues.

The project focuses on four main activities:

  • A two-day workshop with 10 persons with disabilities.
  • Virtual dialogue workshops led by media professionals with specialists in disability issues. These workshops aim to educate the local community about the rights of persons with disabilities and the relevant laws and international agreements.
  • Awareness publications on Behametkum’s social media page, focusing on rights and laws.
  • Three awareness workshops on the latest developments in disability issues.
  • Organizing the event in collaboration with governmental institutions.
  • White Cane Day Initiative: The association worked on this initiative for the World White Cane Day.
  • A project within the Vision Project funded by GIZ.
  • A series of joint activities to allow students to experience the daily life of individuals with visual disabilities.
